In this club you will learn how artists organize page elements to create effective, professional designs – you will be expected to work towards refining your designs, editing and revising your artwork repeatedly, and pushing them into a professional level.
Design Club: Projects
Design is all around you. Every poster, every video game, every website, every advertisement, even this very page, is designed by a graphic designer. In this course, students will learn the essential components to designing photographic compositions and using the image as a means of communication. Image design is the process of communicating visually by using text and images to present information. By learning the various principles that artists use, we can subconsciously and secretly control where and what the viewer looks at in one of our pieces.
Design Club: About Me
Throughout Semester 1, we will focus primarily on photography and the fundamentals of Photoshop. Students will gain experience using point-and-shoot cameras and digital single-lens reflex cameras and learn how to edit and manipulate simple images. We will cover historical and contemporary trends in photography, the impact that the photographs have had on our society, and how photographers use light, composition, and subject matter to convey meaning. We will begin by concentrating primarily on the Principles of Design and methods of constructing compelling photographs. Moving into the 2nd quarter, students will work on various ways to use photographic techniques to create and communicate meaning. For each project, we will have 2-3 guiding questions that we focus on dissecting, using photography as a means with which to answer and explore the problems at hand. Themes will focus on context, documentary photography, everyday life, culture, tableaux, narrative art, and surveillance.
Design Club: About Me
As we move into 2nd Semester, we will change our focus towards the field of graphic design. Graphic Design is at the center of the media and the impacts that media relations have on our society. You will learn how to effectively design products (CD artwork, packaging, logos, etc.), posters, magazines, newspapers, advertisements, possibly some animation, and websites. We will use the techniques covered in Semester 1 to create original and professional-looking designs using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
Students will learn how to use a combination of typography (designing text,) drawing, photography, higher-level thinking skills, aesthetics, page layouts, digital imaging, and software to create products intended for the marketplace. Each project will consist of a problem, question, and theme that we will use Graphic Design to solve and analyze.
At the end of the year, you will construct an electronic website portfolio, which can be updated and used as you move into your post-secondary endeavors.
